Boat modifications

Refit notes from the workshop aboard Novera

We try to do as much of our own boat work as we can, so we can understand every system and fix it ourselves when we're far from help. This page is the running record of what we have changed, what is in progress, and what we plan to tackle next.

Self-sufficiency comes first

Every change we make has to earn its place. We favour simple, serviceable parts and avoid systems we cannot repair with tools we carry. Current work centres on power, sail handling, and ground tackle.

Active refit priorities

Major projects

Power, sail handling, and ground tackle

Solar and battery system

We added solar panels and a battery bank so the boat can run its essential electronics and fridge without starting the engine. Notes cover wiring routes, fusing, charge monitoring, and what we learned about real-world output on overcast passages.

Sail handling improvements

Changes to our reefing lines, sheet leads, and furling setup were made to let us manage sail alone and in freshening breeze. We record what worked, what chafed, and what we would change.

Ground tackle upgrades

We upgraded our anchor, chain, and windlass arrangement to hold confidently in changing conditions. Each entry explains the parts chosen, the installation steps, and how the setup performed at anchor.

How we work

Our refit process, step by step

Every new piece of gear goes through the same sequence before we rely on it offshore.

Test on the dock

Bench-check and dock-test each component before installation, noting any faults.

Install and document

Record parts, tools, routing, and fixings so the work can be repeated or repaired.

Evaluate under way

Use the system on passages, then write an honest assessment of performance and lessons learned.
